A Train, An Island Chain And A Whaling Mystery For The Long Dark

Hinterland Studio has released Iron Road, a new expansion for The Long Dark, in Early Access on Steam.

The Australian Steam store page lists it at A$34.95, or A$31.45 with 10 per cent off, with a release date of 27 October. It is downloadable content, so the base game is needed to play it.

Iron Road is set on Cauldron Island, a chain of northern islands with more than 100km of railway and the remains of an abandoned whaling industry.

The store page says players restore a century-old Prototype Train and use it to travel the line, as part transport and part mobile shelter.

The story follows Alice McLeod, great-granddaughter of the industrialist Hamish McLeod, whose whale-oil empire on the island failed a century ago.

Hazards listed include broken track, rock falls, avalanches and Aurora effects that grow more extreme further along the line.

At launch, the Autopilot Boat runs from Desolation Point on Great Bear Island to Port Remnant on Cauldron Island. The first area is Anna Island, with nearly 30 kilometres of railroad.

The archipelago has five main islands, named after McLeod’s daughters. Later Early Access updates are set to reveal the other four.

Hinterland also lists additions planned over Early Access, including a Portable Oil Heater, a Wax Cylinder Player and a Harpoon, with new clothing, food and wildlife.

Some of that content is designed to come back to Great Bear Island in the base game, while the train itself works on Cauldron Island only.

The expansion was among Steam’s Australian top sellers when the chart was read on Wednesday afternoon.
