South Korea is the Overwatch World Cup champion again, eight years after its last title. The Koreans beat Saudi Arabia 4-1 in Anaheim, a day after Australia’s run ended in the quarterfinals.
The Overwatch World Cup is back in Korean hands. South Korea closed out BlizzCon 2026 with a 4-1 grand final win over Saudi Arabia on 13 September, US time. It is the country’s fourth World Cup, following wins in 2016, 2017 and 2018, and it makes South Korea the most successful nation in the tournament’s history.
The knockout stage ran across 12 and 13 September in the Anaheim Convention Center Arena. Eight teams made it out of the August group stage in Busan: the United States, Sweden, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Germany, Spain, France and South Korea. Blizzard’s viewers guide set it up as a straight bracket. Quarterfinals ran on the Saturday, then semifinals, the bronze medal match and the grand final on the Sunday.
The quarterfinal draw had a twist. Instead of a fixed seeding, the top-seeded teams picked their quarterfinal opponents through special 1v1 rounds played during the group stage. That group stage was the bigger field, with 16 nations in round-robin play in Busan from 20 to 23 August, per Field Level Media. Only half of them got the trip to California.
Australia’s run ends against France
We will start with the bad news. Australia drew France in the quarterfinals and could not find a map. France won the best-of-five 3-0 on 12 September, sending our squad home before the Sunday.
It still counts as a good campaign. Australia came through the online qualifiers and then finished second in Busan’s Group B behind Saudi Arabia, according to the tournament’s Wikipedia record. That was enough to book one of eight seats at BlizzCon. The roster was Colourhex, sgy, cuFFa, punk, Ackyyy, Bertlog and hamster.
France went on to prove the quarterfinal was not a fluke. They pushed South Korea the full distance in the semifinal and took the bronze medal over Sweden.
South Korea’s path went through the United States first, a 3-0 sweep in the quarterfinals. The semifinal against France was the closest series of the weekend. Field Level Media reports the Koreans dropped the first two maps before winning three straight to take it 3-2. One more lost map and there is no Korean title to write about.
Saudi Arabia had a much easier Sunday. They swept Sweden 3-0 to reach the final, backing up the group win they had posted ahead of Australia in Busan.
Grand final, map by map
Saudi Arabia struck first and South Korea answered with four in a row. Here is how the final went, per Field Level Media’s scores:
- Nepal: Saudi Arabia won 2-0
- Neon Junction: South Korea won 3-1
- New Junk City: South Korea won 3-2
- Route 66: South Korea won 2-1
- Esperança: South Korea won, 106.46m to 100.74m
That Nepal loss was the only map South Korea dropped in the final. New Junk City and Route 66 were both decided by a single point, so the scoreline flatters the Koreans a little. Esperança settled it on distance, by under six metres.
Kim “Simple” Ji-sung was named MVP. The winning roster was HeeSang, SeonJun, Stalk3r, Junbin, MAX, CH0R0NG and Simple, as listed by esports.gg.
“I felt a strong sense of duty to reclaim our position as Overwatch World Cup champions,” Simple told Inven Global. MAX kept it simpler: “It feels amazing to represent our country together and win.” CH0R0NG pointed to the backing behind the squad: “I think we were able to win like this because WDG, Nexon, and Crazy Raccoon provided so much support.”
Saudi Arabia’s silver medal roster was Youbi, Quartz, LBBD7, ZIYAD, TVNT, SirMajed and zox. Their Nepal win made them one of only two teams to take a map off South Korea at BlizzCon, France being the other.
What you can still claim
The trophy has been handed out, but the viewing rewards have not all expired. Blizzard’s guide lists 21 daily Opera GX cosmetics, with new rewards each day through the end of September. If you watched the broadcast with drops linked, check your account for those in-game rewards too.
The World Cup Crowdfunding Bundle was sold to support the prize pool, and the event also brought a Mythic Widowmaker skin built around Overwatch esports history. Prize amounts per placing have not been published in any source we could find, so we are not going to guess at them.
Saudi Arabia leaves Anaheim with silver, France with bronze, and Australia with a top-eight finish and a quarterfinal to learn from. If you missed the weekend, the broadcast ran on the Overwatch Esports YouTube and Twitch channels, with Japanese streams alongside and SOOP and CHZZK carrying it in Korea.
