Of everything Blizzard put on stage at the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony in Anaheim on 12 September, the Overwatch segment was probably the one with the most in it for people already playing every week (rather than those of us being asked to wait until 2029 for something). Game director Aaron Keller introduced a new vampire-inspired support hero called Doctrine, there’s a new escort map, and two of the most argued-about heroes on the roster are being pulled apart and put back together for Season 5, which Blizzard has down for 6 October. Doctrine is Hero 54 and an ally of Doomfist, and as far as I can tell his kit revolves around draining lifeforce with a sceptre, infusions that change his next ability, and bat-like drones that heal his team – he was playable on the show floor and in a limited-time Hero Trial at home that ran until 14 September. The new map, Watchpoint: Grímsvötn, is set in a volcano prison in Iceland, which I’d say is a fairly pointed choice given who seems to have just broken out of one.
The bigger talking point, though, is Sombra, who is moving from Damage into Support, making her only the second hero to change roles after Doomfist went to Tank. Blizzard’s own post doesn’t go deep into the numbers, but according to The Magic Rain’s rundown she’ll be able to hack health packs for herself and her allies, and hack teammates directly to give them healing over time. Her shift ability drops zones that weaken enemies and heal friends, while her invisibility and ultimate stay largely as they are (which, depending on which side of a Sombra you’ve usually been on, is either a relief or the exact part you wanted changed). Roadhog gets the other rework, and the idea, in Blizzard’s words as reported by PC Gamer, is that he’ll “actually be able to help out his team” – apparently that means less damage from his primary fire, a chain that no longer drags you close enough for the melee kill, and a new ability that swallows enemy projectiles so he can fire them back or use them for a jump boost.
The rest of the list is a bit of a grab bag, but a generous one. Hero 55 was teased for 2027, the Overwatch Spotlight returns in February 2027 to lay out the year, and Matt Mercer ran QuestWatch, a live tabletop one-shot, on Overwatch’s YouTube and Twitch channels on 13 September. YOASOBI played the Overwatch World Cup halftime show, LE SSERAFIM closed things out with their in-game collaboration returning, and GamesRadar also caught mention of an unvaulted battle pass and Dokiwatch making a comeback. The one worth acting on right now is the BlizzCon Mythic Voucher, which you get just by playing a single game after the Opening Ceremony, and which can be swapped for one eligible complete Mythic bundle from Seasons 1 to 14 as long as you redeem it by 5 October (anyone who already owns every base Mythic skin gets 50 Mythic Prisms instead).
The honest caveat is that almost everything above about how Sombra and Roadhog will actually feel comes from panel rundowns rather than patch notes, and when GamesRadar first reported the reworks on the day, both kits were still under wraps. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the finer detail shifts before 6 October, and anyone who mained Roadhog for the hook combo is probably going to have feelings about it either way. Still, I’d say it’s the most interesting shake-up the roster has had in a while, so claim that voucher before 5 October, try Doctrine when Season 5 goes live, and keep an eye on the patch notes for the rest.
