The Borderlands series has sold more than 100 million units, according to Gearbox Software — and the studio is putting money behind a community charity drive in the same breath.

Both announcements sit in a message to the entire Borderlands community that Gearbox posted to Steam this week, a little over a year after Borderlands 4 launched. The milestone gets one line: “the Borderlands franchise has officially crossed 100 million units sold!” The post does not break that figure down by game or platform, and gives no sales number for Borderlands 4 alone.

The charity news has more detail. The Hunt — which Gearbox calls a “long-standing community fundraising event” — starts on 6 November, and raises money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

The post says the event generated a record US$118,995.80 for St. Jude earlier this year. This time, it says, “2K Foundations, the driving force behind 2K’s social impact, and Gearbox will match every dollar donated to The Hunt up to last year’s record amount, potentially raising more than $230,000 for St. Jude.” That $230,000 is the post’s own figure, in US dollars, and it depends on donations reaching the record first.

The post also looks back on the first year of Borderlands 4 content: two Story Packs, five Bounty Packs and two new Vault Hunters, along with new features and activities.

What comes next is less specific. Gearbox says it has wrapped its Year 1 roadmap, the team is working on more Borderlands 4 content for next year, and Weekly Activity refreshes and Community Challenges will continue. It is also “taking a bigger look at the franchise as a whole”, and asks players which characters and stories they want more of — but it gives no dates and no new game. “All that said,” the post goes on, “big plans take time, and we need some room to work.”

For anyone joining now, Borderlands 4 on Steam was A$54.97 in Australia this morning, half its A$109.95 price.
