On Thursday the trailer for Rockstar Games’ newest game Red Dead Redemption 2 was revealed. The reveal was teased by Rockstar earlier with a message reading the date of an announcement with the Red Dead themed background. The new game is a prequel of the original Red Dead Redemption released in 2010.
The story follows the character Arthur Morgan, a member of Dutch Van Der Linde’s gang, whom John Marston from the first game, was also a member of. The prequel is once again set in the American west before the events of John Marston’s story line in the first game. The game is rumoured to be set in 1906, 5 years prior to the original game set in 1911 as the gang is still together.
The absence of the protagonist in the first game, set in the future could mean the character might not make it through to the end of this game. Returning characters however such as Dutch Van Der Linde we know will survive into the events of the previous game. We may also see other characters from the first game return here including John Marston and Bill Williamson.
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5 was the last game the company made before this reveal, it was released back in 2013 but has had many additions to it since then. Inspiration from the infamous game seems to have seeped into the trailer with a train and bank heist making an appearance. Whether or not this could mean there will be GTA like heist missions in the game is not yet known.
Other possible additions teased in the trailer could include new weapons such as the dual wielded revolvers and the more stealthy bow and arrow. The trailer also features some of the local wildlife including alligators and returning bears that you will probably once again have to fight off.
The location of the game has also likely changed, or at least expanded since the first game. “We got lawmen in three different states after us, they chased us from the west, they chased us over the mountains.” Further east now you’ll accompany the gang “as they rob, fight and steal their way across the vast and rugged heart of America in order to survive.”
With a lot of games going the online multiplayer direction these days and the fact that Rockstar’s GTA online has been such a huge hit, it could be a possibility to see an online aspect emerge. The first Red Dead Redemption did in fact feature an online multiplayer mode but expect this one to be in line with the new times.
Red Dead Redemption 2 is set for release next year in Australia’s Autumn on console with no release date set for PC as of yet.
