CRACK’s Developer Ships Two Hotfixes In A Day After Its Steam Launch

CRACK — a one-to-four player co-op game about breaking open a giant egg in a laboratory — launched on Steam this week, and its developer, Rafoli — who writes about the game in the first person — has already pushed two release hotfixes and a graphics fix.

The launch went out at 9:30am PT on 26 October, according to the developer’s pre-launch post, which was 3:30am AEDT on Tuesday 27 October by our conversion.

The Australian Steam store page lists the game at A$11.90, down to A$10.11 with 15 per cent off, and names Rafoli as both developer and publisher.

The pre-launch post put the wishlist count at 120,000 three days before launch — “I didn’t expect 120,000 people to care this much about an egg,” the developer wrote.

The loop, as the post describes it, is that “every crack earns money. Money buys you a better way to crack.” Players start at the shell with basic tools and end up with automated robots, explosives and scaffolding climbing the egg.

The post also lists hidden doors, locked areas, multiple endings, 40 achievements (five of them hidden) and a speedrun leaderboard.

CRACK was built in public, with every stage posted online, and the developer credits players for the golf carts and explosives in the launch build — “you asked for them in the comments.”

Release Hotfix #1 raised the Steam connection timeout from 10 to 30 seconds and added an invert Y axis toggle, and Release Hotfix #2 added a “Reduce Camera Motion” setting for motion sickness and fixed a bug where the day never started after passing out in the break room.

The third update, v1.0.36, reverted a change that had caused problems for players on AMD 9000 series cards. “I attempted to fix a separate issue yesterday and ended up causing this one,” Rafoli wrote.

CRACK was seventh on Steam’s Australian top sellers when we read the list this morning. Neither the store page nor the developer’s posts say where Rafoli is based.
