This weekend marks another key event in the Australian Fighting Game Community – the fifth annual South Australian major – the Southern Cross Championships. The SXC2K17 returns to the University of Adelaide, at the Mayo Cafe for a new round of fighting game fun.

The main card line up consists of Street Fighter V, Super Smash Bros Wii U and Super Smash Bros Melee along with this year’s newest releases: Injustice 2, Guilty Gear XRD Rev 2 and Marvel VS Capcom: Infinite. Older titles, like Super Street Fighter II Turbo and Vampire Savior,  are still available for play as well as some games that have faded into the lime light such as Mortal Kombat XL and Ultra Street Fighter IV each with their side tournaments.

Road to EVO Japan

Competitors will be excited to hear that the winners of Guilty Gear XRD Rev 2, Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 will receive return tickets to compete in the upcoming EVO Japan in January. But not only is there a chance to compete on an international level, but also a chance to receive some pretty good pot bonuses:

  • +$1000 Injustice 2
  • +$1000 Marvel VS Capcom: Infinite
  • +$1000 Guilty Gear XRD Rev 2
  • +$1000 Super Smash Bros Wii U
  • +$100 Street Fighter III: Third Strike

Spectators can expect lot of fighting game finesse over the weekend as these various tournaments unfold. Casual play is also available for competitors and spectators alike, giving veterans and newcomers a common ground. A playable demo of Bandai Namco’s upcoming Dragon Ball FighterZ will also be available for players to come and taste.

Another opportunity to play an awesome game

Although tournament entry for main card titles have ended, entry for side tournaments as well as spectator passes are available at the door. More info can be found on the event’s smash.gg and Facebook page.
