I think Capcom has done something quietly smart, and I want to give it credit before the expansion hogs all the attention. Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen came out today, and on the very same day the base game got an update that adds Hard Mode. Not a promise, and not a vague line about coming soon, but the actual mode, sitting in the patch notes dated 9 October. I mean, the base game has been out since March 2024, so this could easily have trickled out weeks after the expansion, and it did not.
Here is why it matters to me. A difficulty option is not a feature you sprinkle on later like a seasonal event, because it is part of how a game decides who it is for. When a studio adds one long after launch, the timing tells you a lot. Drop it in on a random Tuesday and it feels like housekeeping. Put it out on the day you are asking everyone to come back and spend money again, and it feels like an invitation, which is exactly what this is.

The detail I like most is not even Hard Mode itself. The same update adds a way to carry over your current saved data and start the game again from the beginning. Put those two things together and you have the obvious question for anyone returning answered for you: you do not have to choose between your old Arisen and a harder fresh run, because you can bring one into the other. That’s the kind of decision I’d much rather a studio make for me than leave me to agonise over.
Is it perfect? Probably not, and I’m not going to pretend I know how the new mode balances, because that is for people who play it to tell you. Capcom’s own countdown post earlier this week only said Hard Mode was “on the way”, with no date, and I’ll admit that line made me expect a long wait. You can be annoyed at vague announcements and still be pleased when the thing actually lands on time, and I am both of those today.

There’s a lesson here for other games with an expansion on the calendar. If you are going to ask people to return, give them a reason to start fresh on the same day, not a reason to wait. A harder mode, a clean restart, a tweak to how the world rewards you for exploring again, these are the things that turn a paid expansion into a proper homecoming. Players are very good at coming back when the door is open, and very bad at it when they have to keep checking whether it is.
So here is where I land. I’d have liked the countdown post to say “today” instead of “on the way”, but I’m not going to hold that against an update that did the right thing. If you are heading north into the new region tonight, are you carrying your old save over, or starting again on Hard? Me, I would start again, and I would probably regret it by the first big fight.
