Spider-Man PS4 released two weeks ago to record breaking sales and has just become Sony’s fastest selling first party title. With the official numbers releasing yesterday, Spider-Man PS4 sold 3.3 million copies in its first three days. This beats out the previous record holder, God of War at 3.1 million in May, for the fastest selling first party title. Spider-Man PS4 also beat another Sony first-party record, with one million preordered copies. As USA Today notes, at $60 USD a game, Spider-Man PS4’s estimated revenue translates to roughly $198 million. This blows Marvel’s Spiderman: Homecoming theatrical box office, at $117 million, out of the water.
“Our expectations are always set at the highest levels,” said Sony global VP of sales Stephen Turvey. “It’s met and exceeded all expectations. I think the company, and the campus, and our fans are super proud of it.” He added that Insomniac Games brought Spider-Man back “in a way that you want to experience it.”
Spider-Man PS4 is not only commercially successful, but also has received universal praise from critics and game journalists. It currently sits at a score of 87 on metacritic.com, ranking it within PS4’s top ten releases in 2018. While critics praise the rich story, deep combat mechanics, seemingly limitless content and clear love of the Spiderman source material, it is the movement that has garnered overwhelmingly positive responses. Web-swinging is fluid and effortless, allowing the player to navigate through New York in the exact way you would expect from a Spider-Man game.
Spider-Man’s stellar success is just another landmark title for Sony in 2018. Following the release of first party classics like God of War (2018), Shadow of the Colossus (2018) and Detroit: Become Human, Sony’s outstanding 2018 is comparable to Nintendo’s 2017 and their financial success is indicative of this, as the PlayStation 4 still dominates the console sales.
Insomniac Studios is continuing support for Spider-Man, with three DLC packs announced and a New Game Plus mode. All three independent story DLC can be purchased in the “City That Never Sleeps” Bundle for $30 or separately for $10. DLC 1, “The Heist”, releases on 23 October and featured Felicia Hardy aka Black Cat.
