Sony has confirmed that they will be ‘skipping’ E3 2019
Sony has confirmed in a statement that they will not attend the biggest gaming event of 2019. With one of the biggest names in the entire gaming industry missing from the event, the gaming community is unsure of what this means for Playstation in the coming year.
Since the launch of E3 in 1995, Sony Interactive Entertainment has been a key presence. The company has presented every year, yet there have been many suggestions that they will be completely absent from the 2019 E3 conference.
Variety broke the news of this earlier today. This was based on the official press release of the 2019 E3 conference, released by E3 parent organisation the Electronic Software Association. Sony’s absence was noted in this press release.
GamesBeat also reported that the ESA had confirmed Sony’s absence.
Speaking to Gameinformer, Sony confirmed their departure.
“As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community. PlayStation fans mean the world to us and we always want to innovate, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers. As a result, we have decided not to participate in E3 in 2019. We are exploring new and familiar ways to engage our community in 2019 and can’t wait to share our plans with you.”
This isn’t the first news of Sony cancelling an annual event. Sony also announced that they would not be running their annual Playstation Experience event, scheduled to be held in December. During this even Sony would usually showcase their upcoming games and plans for the next year.
Sony attributes this decision to having a lack of content to show. Sony had some major titles be released in 2018, such as the bestselling Spiderman title and God of War. Their admitted lack of content may indicate a slower year for Sony in 2019.
Sony Interactive Entertainment title Days Gone was pushed back again earlier this year. The game is now expected to be released in April 2019. Days Gone is the most notable project of Sony Interactive Entertainment at this stage.
Those in the gaming community may wonder what this unprecedented silence means for Sony. With little content to display, only time will tell what else we will see of Sony in 2019.
