Rockstar Suffers a Huge Loss as the Vice-President Departs After 20 Years
Jeronimo Barrera, Rockstar’s Vice President of product development has quit after 20 years in his role. He has played a pivotal role in the production and development of every Rockstar title that has been released in the last 20 years. While we cannot yet tell what this will mean for the future of Rockstar Games, it is sure to be a critical loss to the iconic video game publishing company.
According to a report released by Variety, Barrera described his exit from the role as a “natural progression”.
“I looked at what I would be doing for the next few years if I stayed on and where I was in life with my family, my kids, my desire to make cool s**t. I felt like it was hitting all of the right points,” He said.
His departure comes shortly after the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, which is known to be one of the company’s biggest projects of the last decade. This is in addition to the most recent instalment of Grand Theft Auto in 2013.
It was this interview with Variety that announced the departure of Barrera, after his officially left his role in December 2018.
In this interview, Barrera offers an interesting perspective on his reason for leaving the company. Citing that he has interest in different fields in the gaming and technology industry, he described that if he had stayed at Rockstar “it would have been more GTAs, more RDRs and less of this other stuff going on out there right now.”
In spite of this comment, Barrera was not short of great things to say about his time at the company.
Nevertheless, despite his bold step away from Rockstar and the massive, award-winning game he played a central part in creating, Barrera commented on his time with the company.
Feeling that Grand Theft Auto V, particularly the incredibly Online aspect of the game, was ‘underrated’. Claiming that it was the impactful nature of Grand Theft Auto V Online, he commented that it “galvanized what online gaming for consoles can be.”
It is hard to say how the departure of such a critical team member will impact the future of Rockstar Games. While it is certain to have a significant impact internally, Barrera is confident that he is leaving a great team of developers behind to replace him.
