Well, the time is now- Paramount have finally released a trailer for the soon to be train-wreck that is Sonic the Hedgehog ’19. It’s times like these when you think to yourself, ‘Who asked for a buddy-cop movie featuring a talking realistically blue Hedgehog- probably ruining his childhood 90’s tude image- by the same guys who made The Fast and the Furious?’ I mean, I know I’m not the target demographic for this movie, but Sonic was, and always will be, one of my first venture’s into gaming and a series I hold close to me in all of it’s 90’s glory… and this is something else. In this adaption of the movie, we have Jim Carrey playing Dr. Eggman, confusingly called Dr. Robotnik. If you are unfamiliar with this issue, in Japan, this vile villain was always called Dr. Eggman, where in the west, he was known as Dr. Robotnik – up until 1999 where he adopted to Eggman name with passing references to Robotnik being an insult.
In short, it’s very confusing that they’d pander to nostalgia when their target demographic would have no clue as he’s been called Eggman for the last 20 years, and the older fans want nothing to do with this movie. But alas, I’m getting carried away. Jim Carrey certainly does channel his best ‘Jim Carrey‘ impression while playing Dr. Robotnik and it’s quite distracting, but this whole project is. The trailer opens with Coolio’s Gangsta’s Paradise for some reason (no idea what demographic they’re appealing to there with that choice – It’s a good song, but doesn’t evoke the Sonic felling for me) and you see the natural hi-jinks and a very basic plot line to not ‘spoil’ the movie. Wow, what a trip this has been. Sonic the Hedgehog ’19 is set to release in November of this year, and despite the tragedy it is sure to be, you can find me buying tickets for this day one. Speed on, little hedgehog.
