GC: What was your reaction to finding out that The Gardens Between has been nominated for two awards at the AGAs?
MC: Being nominated for Indie Game of the Year and Australian Game Of The Year is a huge honour for us. You only need to look at the list of games and see that there is some very high-quality content in there.
GC: What can you tell us about the production process of this game?
MC: We started work on the game in 2014 with a team of four (writer, programmer, artist, & game designer). Over the four and a half years of development we had up to nine people working on the game at any one time. Building The Gardens Between was a huge endeavour for us because the player is controlling time Every microsecond of the game needs to be perfect so a lot of work goes into building every level.
When you’ve been working on a game for such a long time, it’s easy to go a bit crazy. Whenever we had design problems, Josh (the animator on the team) would often suggest making one of the characters ride a giant moth. Now, if you’ve played the game, it doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, but for some reason it kept resurfacing in every discussion.
GC: Is there anything else you want to add?
MC: The hugest of Thank You’s would have to go to everyone in The Arcade. What a fantastic office space, and being surrounded by so many talented developers inspired us every day to make The Gardens Between as good as it could be. <3
