GC: What was your reaction to being nominated?
NP: I was so excited when I was told of my nomination! It means a lot to me on a personal level, but also as a fan of FIFA Esports. It’s further evidence that the scene is growing and starting to get significant recognition within esports in Australia.
GC: What can you tell us about the Esports High Performance Centre?
NP: The Esports High Performance Centre is home to three professional teams: the Dire Wolves who play League of Legends, the Sydney Drop Bears who play Overwatch, and N8 Esports who play FIFA 19. We’re based within the Sydney Cricket Ground, and offer our players the best coaching and facilities in Australia. We take a holistic approach to managing our players. It’s not just about grinding endlessly: they need balance, empathy and support. It’s a privilege to do my part in looking after and improving them.
GC: 10 Years ago, did you image that esports would become a viable career path?
NP: 10 years ago the esports scene was completely different, particularly when it comes to FIFA! I was playing competitively back then and when I won a tournament, the best possible result was to receive a trophy or a small prize. But in the FUT Champions Cup in Bucharest on the weekend, the prize pool was $275,000 AUD, which is a bit of an improvement! *laughs* There are so many opportunities within esports today, not just as a player, but as a commentator, graphic designer, psychologist – you name it. And it really is expanding every day.
GC: Is there anything else that you would like to add?
NP: Just a big thank you to all the Australians out there playing FIFA Ultimate Team and getting around FIFA Esports in general. I love chatting with old and new fans alike, so pop into the stream or drop me a line on Twitter! Without players and fans, we are nothing, so let’s work together to continue to grow FIFA in our region.
